Clevedon Town 1 Yate Town 1
With this fixture having been postponed twice... it was third time lucky for both sides as they kicked off in driving wind and rain! And for all their hard work in dreadful playing conditions both sides had to settle for a 1-1 draw.
Recent Swansea City loan signing Kerry Morgan made his full home debut in the starting line-up. With Mike Trought out through injury and Christian Sylvester suspended, Manager Phil Bater was left with Matt Prosser and Shane Hobbs on the substitutes bench.
The first half kicked off with Kerry Morgan impressing the home fans with an early run on goal, however, an experienced Bluebells defence did just enough to prevent the lively young winger from releasing his shot on goal. Clevedon suffered an early setback in the 9th minute when the Bluebells broke away with Craig Davidge measured pass finding Sam O’Sullivan, who slotted home at the near post to open the scoring for the visitors.
Clevedon struck back and equalised in the 18th minute, when Kerry Morgan’s superbly struck effort sailed past Tony Court in the visitors goal. With the wind behind them, Yate pressed forward in search of another goal which nearly came in the 21st minute, Paul Chenoweth latched onto a forward ball and with Danny Greaves off his line chipped over for what looked to be a certain goal, however, Clevedon skipper Rob Scott got back to head the ball off the line. Ten minutes later Aaron Blakemore saw his well struck wind assisted free kick hit the crossbar. Both sides continued to compete for the ball but neither really impressed with any real attempts on goal and the half ended all square.
A scrappy start to the second half saw both sides work hard but struggle to play in the deteriorating weather conditions. Majority of football was played in the Yate half as severe gales whistled across the pitch. Routine goal kicks were farcical as players stood on the edge and sometimes within the penalty area as the visiting keeper attempted his goal kicks. Manager Phil Bater used both his available substitutes with Shane Hobbs and Matt Prosser replacing Kyle Bassett and Mitchell Page. The match continued until the final whistle with both sides unable to really test either keeper. At the end a draw was probably a fair result considering the poor weather conditions.
Man of the match goes to Clevedon skipper Rob Scott for his controlled defending in difficult playing conditions.
