Swindon Supermarine 1 Clevedon Town 1
Clevedon Town travelled to a blustery and showery Hunts Copse looking to repeat their recent 6-0 Errea Cup win over Swindon Supermarine, but came away instead with a 1-1 draw, their 15th league draw of the season.
Phil Bater started with the same 11 that took the field at Didcot and, with loan signing from Swansea City Kerry Morgan on the bench, all five substitutes shirts were needed.
In a mostly forgettable first half both teams struggled to put any decent moves together. On 18 minutes a rasping shot from the edge of the box by Marine’s Chris Taylor beat Danny Greaves, but came back off the inside of the post. The same player went close twice more – firstly with a free kick that went wide and then a lob that was smartly tipped over the bar by Greavsie. Richard Kear also had a shot well saved by The Seasiders custodian. By this time Mike Trought had limped off to be replaced by a fit again Kevin Davies. Clevedon waited until the 30th minute for an attempt on goal when a Kris Leek cross flashed across the face of the goal where Kyle Basset got the slightest of touches with his head, but not enough to divert the ball past Tom King in the Swindon goal. Just before the break Clevedon’s best football of the half resulted in a screamer from Christian Sylvester just going over the bar as the half ended goalless.
The Seasiders started the second period much more positively, taking the game to their hosts and got their reward in the 55th minute when a Danny Haines corner came back out to him and he beat the full back and put in a hanging cross for Mitchell Page to ghost between the two central defenders and powerfully head in his 10th goal of the season to put Clevedon one up. On 58 minutes new boy Kerry Morgan replaced Kyle Bassett and had an immediate impact with his pace as he broke down the wing and was fouled by Marines’s keeper who came charging out of his area to tackle him. King was duly booked by the referee Mr Andy Davies from Southampton to become the third Swindon player cautioned. The game turned uglier five minutes later when Swindon substitute Nathan Lightbody made a quick return to the changing rooms after being sent off for fouling and then kicking out at Josh Brigham.
On 75 minutes some lovely quick passing between Haines and Morgan put Chris Sylvester through one-on-one with the keeper, but King made a good save from Christian’s shot and an even better one as Chris followed up with a second shot from the rebound. Despite having most of the possession Clevedon were punished in the 80th minute when a Supermarine free kick was allowed to bounce in the box to find Lee Henry unmarked at the back post where he easily headed the equaliser into an empty net. However Clevedon came back strongly against the ten men when Geraint Bater (just on as a sub for Sylvester) had his header saved, while at the other end Richard Kear headed a free kick well over the bar. In the last few minutes the lively Morgan had two half-chances to give The Seasiders the win that they deserved. Firstly a defensive error gave Kerry a chance to lob King, but his attempt went wide. Then a minute later the same player was put through again and this time his lob was on target, but was headed off the line straight to Mitch Page, who had time to control the ball and score, but instead his rushed header was too weak and the chance went begging. The ref then blew for full time leaving Clevedon with another draw, but one which felt like a defeat in a game that we should have won.
