Paulton Rovers 2 Clevedon Town 0

Clevedon Town will be disappointed to see their Somerset Premier Cup run for 2007/8 end at the hands of Paulton Rovers. Having beaten lower league opposition in the form of Bishop Sutton 5-0 in the round before, Town should’ve been confident of defeating their hosts from just one division below themselves, however a lacklustre performance in a dour game saw Clevedon heading for the exit.

The warning sides had already been shown by the confident home side before left full back Chris Lane raced onto a long pass up the line, cutting inside Josh Brigham before fortuitously seeing his well struck shot catch a deflection that looped the ball over the hapless Danny Greaves. Although a lucky strike it was no more than the Winterfield Road side deserved, and Town had Danny Greaves to thank for a splendid first half display that kept the visitors within touching distance of their rampant hosts. First Greaves tipped over a well hit shot from Rob Cousins after Paulton had worked a clever corner routine, and the former Bristol Rovers’ keeper was forced to save well from headers from both former Clevedon striker Rob Claridge and also his strike partner Dan Cleverly as the hosts attacked with vigour. Clevedon produced little of note beyond a snap shot from new signing Matt Prosser in the first period, and were instead left rueing an increasing injury list with both Geraint Bater and Scott Hendy hobbling off.

The second-half began with Clevedon attempting to increase the pressure on their hosts. Some better football from Town created an opportunity for Josh Brigham to level the scores with a back post header, however a combination of Rovers’ keeper Dave Dyson and defender Nick Hudson kept Town at bay. Soon after Brigham was again in the thick of the action, shooting narrowly wide when well placed after Kris Leek’s long throw wasn’t properly dealt with by Paulton.

Further chances came for Clevedon but wayward shooting left Dyson untroubled in the Paulton goal. Instead the game took an entirely different turn, with Clevedon forced to play the closing stages with just 9 men. First Kyle Bassett saw red-card after thrashing out at his opposite number Lee Marshall, and moments later a third Clevedon player withdrew through injury, with Kevin Davies hobbling off. With three substitutes already used Town were facing shadows against 11 Paulton men, and their misery was completed when Lee Marshall ended a game of head tennis in the Seasiders’ box by scoring a second.

In summary this was a disappointing evening for the Seasiders; they now find themselves out of two cup competitions in as many weeks, and must now focus their attention on their league campaign, and the forthcoming Errea Cup. Town boss Phil Bater will look to rally his bruised troops for the impending visit of Hemel Hempstead Town, current league leaders, at the Hand Saturday 17th, 3:00pm KO.
