Clevedon Town 3 Rugby Town 2
Every football team at any level, wants to start their league campaign with a win and Clevedon did just that as they beat visitors Rugby Town 3-2 at the Hand Stadium.
The match started superbly for the Seasiders when they went ahead after just 32 seconds when Mike Symons rose to head home a free kick from Geraint Bater, their lead, however, was short lived when Danny Greaves pulled off a brilliant save in the 6th minute only to see the loose ball hammered home by Matt Gearing to bring the scores level. The explosive start continued when Clevedon went ahead just two minutes later when Tyrone Toppar’s corner was headed down by Mike Green for Daine O’Connor to smash home from 2 yards, after that however play settled down and there were few clear chances for either side as the match approached half-time. Danny Greaves was the busier keeper and was called upon to make a couple of excellent saves, but the team went in for the half-time break with Clevedon still leading 2-1.
The second-half started in a similar vain with few clear chances, but Scott Hendy increased the Seasiders lead in the 57th minute when he glanced home Kris Leek’s corner at the near post. The Valley
pushed forward to try and cut the deficit but the only noticeable chance fell to Mike Green whose powerful header was well saved by visiting keeper Farhad Afandiyev. Rugby then enjoyed a good spell and there efforts were rewarded in the 71st minute when Stefan Morley hit a superb volley from well outside the box following a corner. After that both sides had chances to increase the scoring but neither took their opportunity and the game ended with Clevedon hanging on to their 3-2 lead and all three points.
Overall this was a promising performance from a new looking Clevedon side with Kris Leek and Christian Sylvester both standing out. While it’s early days yet the signs are healthy and with Steve Cook still to come things are beginning to gel for the home team.
