King's Lynn 2 Clevedon Town 0

On a dreadful day of strong winds and heavy rain Clevedon Town made the long journey to King’s Lynn, but returned pointless after a 2-0 defeat that saw The Seasiders play most of the second half with just 9 men!

With Kyle Bassett suffering from flu, and Kevin Davies unavailable, Phil Bater started with the same line-up that had won a point at Brackley the previous Saturday, in a game that marked Danny Haines’ 300th competitive game for The Seasiders.

After some initial exchanges, Clevedon went close on 10 minutes when a Geraint Bater corner found Scott Hendy at the far post who’s goal-bound effort appeared to be handled by Dan Buhlemann, but the referee Mr George didn’t give it. King’s Lynn then took the game to the visitors with left winger Joe Francis causing Clevedon’s defence all sorts of problems, shooting wide on a couple of occasions and also having a shot saved well low-down by Danny Greaves. The Seasiders were still holding their own at the half-hour mark when things took at turn for the worse. First Scott Hendy hobbled off with an ankle injury, and then a few minutes later Christian Sylvester ran through a player, which the referee saw as dangerous play, despite the slippery conditions, and with the crowd ‘baying for blood’ showed the Clevedon midfielder a straight red card.

On 40 minutes Dan Buhlemann on the edge of the Clevedon area passed the ball to Danny Bloomfield who beat Danny Greaves with a shot high into the net to give The Linnets the lead. Shortly after Geraint Bater was booked for dissent, but The Seasiders nearly pulled a goal back when a pass back to the ‘keeper was chased down by Mitchell Page only for the goalie to recover the ball in time. That man Francis then tormented Clevedon again with a shot when through, which was smothered by Greavsie, and then and dribble and curling shot which was brilliantly turned round the post by the Clevedon custodian. However, deep into time added on at the end of the half a cross from King’s Lynn was only headed out back to the winger, who returned the ball fast and low across goal for Andrew Fisk to tap in, and Clevedon went into the break two down.

At the start of the second half Clevedon replaced injured defenders Brigham and Hendy with forwards Symons and Cook. Matt Prosser moved to centre-half and Mike Green to full-back. They were just settling into this new formation when Geraint Bater was fouled in a tackle, which deserved a yellow card. However the referee let the offender off with a warning and sent Bates to the touchline after he had received treatment. As he got there the assistant referee flagged for Mr George’s attention and, after a consultation, the referee showed Geraint a second yellow card for dissent, reducing The Seasiders to 9 men and effectively ending the game as a contest.

After that King’s Lynn seemed to lose their way and ambition, not knowing how best to play against 9 men, and even frustrating their own fans, while the Clevedon 9 worked tirelessly to keep the score respectable and try to nick a goal back. The second of two Clevedon corners in the 79th minute resulted in a snap shot by Mike Trought that looked like bringing him his first goal for the club, but it was blocked by The Linnets’ defence. A late booking for Danny Haines, and an open goal miss from a cross to King’s Lynn substitute Matt Nolan brought the proceedings to an end.

My man of the match goes to Mike Trought who was a tower of strength in The Seasiders defence, but special mentions also go to Danny Greaves, who pulled off some tremendous saves, Matt Prosser, who again looked comfortable in the unfamiliar centre-half role, and of course veteran Danny Haines.
