Clevedon Town 1 Hemel Hempstead Town 0
Clevedon welcomed Hemel Hempstead Town to the Hand Stadium for their third match between these sides in as many weeks, and it was Clevedon who recorded their first double of the season in an entertaining match with a well earned 1-0 home win over the league leaders.
Scott Hendy, Geraint Bater, and Mike Trought all came through late fitness tests to play in the starting line-up, Phil Bater decided to play recent signing Matthew Prosser up-front with Mitchell Page, and the young striker repaid his manager in the 77th minute with a superbly taken winning goal.
First half opened with both sides playing some attractive passing football, however, fans had to wait until the 20th minute for the first goal opportunity which fell to Mitchell Page... who just failed to connect with a Danny Haines cross. Tudors leading scorer Drew Roberts nearly opened the scoring for the visitors a few minutes later when his powerful shot was well saved by Danny Greaves. Hemel had further opportunities in front of goal when Adam Martin saw his shot saved and, Oliver Burgess powered his effort wide of the near post.
Both defences continued to frustrate with some excellent defending and Clevedon came closest to breaking the deadlock in the 38th minute when Mitchell Page beat the keeper with a thundering shot which hit the upright and spun out into the penalty area... Matt Prosser followed up but his attempt cleared the crossbar much to the relief of the visiting fans and the half ended 0-0.
Second-half started in the same vain as the first with Matt Prosser coming close in the 47th minute with a powerful header just going over the visitors cross-bar, Hemel replied in the 55th minute when Joshua Sozzo goal-bound header was acrobatically tipped over by Danny Greaves, three minutes later and it was Sozzo who found himself clear on goal, but man-of-the-match Danny Greaves got down well to make a great stop. It was end-to-end stuff as both sides looked for a breakthrough. In the 68th minute substitute Kyle Bassett used his pace to challenge the visiting keeper, however, time ran out for the striker and the Tudors defence managed to scramble the ball away to safety.
The Seasiders were looking more and more dangerous as they probed forward and, the post came to the visitors rescue once again when Mike Green’s thundering shot hit the upright, however, the deadlock was finally broken in the 77th minute, Chris Leeks’ long throw eventually found Matt Prosser on the far-post, and the young striker made no mistake when he struck the ball into the bottom corner for his first goal for the club. Substitute Christian Sylvester nearly doubled the home sides lead in the 88th minute when his side-footed attempt was tipped agonisingly wide of the post by Tudor's custodian Ian Brown. The visitors went in search of an equaliser and it nearly came with the last kick of the ball... substitute Matthew Gearing found himself one-on-one with Danny Greaves who got down well and pulled off another great save to keep the seasiders in front.
The final whistle blew, much to the relief of the home supporters and the frustration of the visiting fans, however, credit must go to both sides for an entertaining game of football.
