Hemel Hempstead Town 0 Clevedon Town 1
Town travelled to the league leaders with just 11 fit players, with the subs bench occupied by Geraint Bater, Mike Trought and Steve Cook, all returning from injury.
The visitors had reason for concern as early as the first minute after Josh Brigham conceded a free-kick on the edge of the Clevedon penalty area. Danny Greaves saved well, pushing the ball out for a corner.
Clevedon had one solitary chance during the opening quarter of an hour, which Hemel dominated, when O’Connor blasted over when well placed. Clevedon’s first corner came on 21 minutes with Mitchell Page rising well to head home, only for the goal to be disallowed for a foul on the keeper. Clevedon then took control with Tyrone Toppar and Daine O’Connor coming close. Further long-range attempts from Danny Haines and Christian Sylvester went wide.
On 36 minutes Kevin Davies took the ball down on the edge of Clevedon’s box and drilled a 60 yard diagonal pass through to Mitchell Page. Mitchell brought the ball down well 25 yards out, rounded the keeper, who had rushed out and had the presence of mind to roll the ball in from the edge of the penalty area, whilst holding off 2 defenders.
Hemel had a go in the final 5 minutes of the half, forcing Danny Greaves to make several saves and Scott Hendy to make a goal line clearance for a corner.
Hemel started the second half strongly with Danny Greaves again doing well. The home crowd appealed for a penalty following a collision between Greaves and a Hemel forward, the referee not wanting to know.
Mitchell Page had a half chance on 55 minutes when he volleyed over from 18 yards, before Danny Greaves saved well at the feet of a Hemel player.
On the hour Clevedon brought on Geraint Bater for Tyrone Toppar, who been having a quiet game. There was an altercation between Scott Hendy and a Hemel forward 5 minutes later and although the referee spoke to both players no action was taken.
The Hemel number 8 received a yellow card on 68 minutes following a poor challenge on Christian Sylvester. The same pair clashed 3 minutes later and the Hemel number 8 was fortunate to escape a 2nd caution. Danny Haines sent in a free-kick which was missed by everyone and went out for a goal-kick.
Hemel made 2 changes in the 82nd and 86th minutes and continued to pressurise the Clevedon defence. Steve Cook replaced Mike Symons in the 85th minute.
In injury-time, with Hemel camped in the Clevedon half, Danny Greaves did extremely well to claim a corner. In the scramble Kevin Davies and the Hemel number 5 ended up on the ground, with the Hemel player kicking out at Davies several times. The referee showed him a straight red card.
An excellent performance from the team... Man of the match: Kevin Davies who did superbly well playing out of position in the centre of defence.
