Clevedon Town 1 Gloucester City 1
Ten man Clevedon were held to a 1-1 draw this afternoon in an often ill tempered match in which neither side overly impressed, Clevedon’s biggest gate of the season.
Clevedon started with Symons and Cook up front with new signing Matt Prosser on the bench. Both sides started off at a fair pace before play was held up in the 10th minute for a bad clash of heads. The collision between Gloucester’s Noakes and Webb saw both players eventually being substituted, which was an early blow for the visitors. Chances were few and far between despite the fast pace, but Clevedon took the lead in the 27th minute when Mike Green scored his first goal for the club after being set up by Steve Cook.
Steve Cook should have increased the lead minutes later when he just missed a Geraint Bater free-kick.
Gloucester came back into the game but the turning point of the match came in the 37th minute when Geraint Bater’s reckless challenge saw him pick up a second yellow and an early bath. The first half closed with a mass brawl following Mike Trought’s challenge, but surprisingly he was the only one booked.
The second-half began with an early chance for the Tigers as they sought to take advantage of their extra player and they equalised on 64 minutes, when Ashley Thomas smashed home from 5 yards following a knock-down from a corner. After that Clevedon had to withstand quite a bit of pressure, but neither side created clear chances and the 1-1 draw was perhaps a fair one for two sides who showed plenty of effort but little finesse.
A disappointing note for Clevedon fans… their old favourite Jack Pitcher was injured and unable to take any part in the match.
