Gloucester City 2 Clevedon Town 1
Clevedon Town made their first ever visit to The New Lawn, home of Blue Square Premier side Forest Green Rovers, to play groundless Gloucester City, but failed to bring home any points as former Seasiders’ favourite Jack Pitcher scored twice to give the home side a 2-1 victory in Clevedon’s 50th competitive match of the season.
With Danny Haines on the bench, Clevedon started with Geraint Bater at left back and also welcomed Mike Trought back to the starting line-up.
Gloucester were first into their stride with Lee Smith shooting wide, and Jack Pitcher having a double effort as his first shot was saved by Danny Greaves and his second from the rebound went over the bar. On 13 minutes a Geraint Bater corner was headed dangerously back across The Tigers box by Scott Hendy, where it just eluded Mitchell Page’s outstretched foot. At the other end Pitcher had another shot that was too high, and then a cross from Smith was headed over by Marc Richards with the Clevedon goal at his mercy. The Seasiders came more into the game in the second half of the first period with a couple good runs by Kerry Morgan causing problems in The Tigers defence. They had their best chance soon after when Mitch Page won the ball on the half-way line and his powerful run was finished with a sizzling shot that went inches wide of Kevin Sawyer’s post. And a few minutes later another good chance went begging when a Kris Leek cross was met by Josh Brigham’s header, but he was unable to keep it from going over the bar. The referee Mr John Busby from Wallingford blew minutes later for half time with the score at 0-0.
In the second half The Tigers got stronger as Clevedon relinquished their control of midfield. Gloucester’s man-of-the-match Smith put in another dangerous cross, which Alex Allard met on the volley to see his shot well saved by Greavsie. Then from a Clevedon corner, taken by Kris Leek, Scott Hendy had a strong header well saved by Sawyer, but on 60 minutes City took the lead as Ashley Thomas played the ball into Jack Pitcher in the box, where he turned and shot low under Danny Greaves and off the inside of the post to put The Tigers 1 up. Soon after the restart a Kerry Morgan shot just missed the top corner, and Danny Greaves was then alert to dispossess Pitcher who had been put clean through. Gloucester continued to press with another header from Allard being saved, and on 78 minutes the same player put Pitcher through again, but this time he went round Danny and shot high into an empty net, where the ball appeared to come off the underside of the bar and hit Josh Brigham, who was trying to get back to clear it, before going in. It would have to go down as Jack’s goal though, and Gloucester went 2 up.
After that Clevedon worked hard to get back into the game and in the 86th minute a Danny Haines corner was hit low and hard back across the goal by Kerry Morgan to the far post, where Tiger’s captain Neil Mustoe slid the ball into his own net, just preventing Josh Brigham from doing the same. A Haines free kick on 90 minutes just couldn’t be reached by Hendy at the back post, and Mr Busby ended the game with a 2-1 win to Gloucester City.
