Well, there some days that just go wrong from the start and just get worse and Saturday’s F A Cup match at Eastleigh was one of them – a very bad day at the office as somebody said. Clevedon went into the game without Mike Green, Craig Davidge and Geraint Bater and sadly found themselves down and out of the game before half time, going 4-0 at half time and 5-0 by the end of a game they will wish to forget. These things happen at all levels of football and there is little you can do about it except try and bounce back straightaway. Having said that I gather Eastleigh put in one of their best performances for a while, although how much of that was down to our own failings we’ll never know. However, we’re out of the F A Cup for another year, it’s happened and we just have to get over it and move on.
The hero for Eastleigh was Andy Forbes, who once played in an F A Vase Final for Winchester City, and who scored a hat-trick, with Damien Scannell scoring the other two. For the record, Forbes opened the scoring in the 10th minute when he converted a penalty after Scott Hendy was adjudged to have handled the ball and added another three minutes later with a glancing header. Scannell added a third on 29 minutes and Forbes added a fourth, and completed his hat trick, two minutes before half time. Clevedon managed to weather the storm in the second half, when Mike Symons had our best chance, but it was Scannell who added a fifth just after the hour mark as Eastleigh comfortably went through to the next round with a great display, although Clevedon will want to forget this result very quickly.
