Cirencester Town 0 Clevedon Town 1

Clevedon progressed in the F A Cup after a comfortable 1-0 victory against Cirencester Town but they made their supporters sweat until the final whistle as they missed a string of opportunities to add to their single goal and kill off a match they largely dominated.

With Mike Green and Craig Davidge unavailable, Christian Sylvester and Dominic Graffagnino came into the side, with Mike Symons and Steve Cook returning to their old club to add spice to an enjoyable afternoon’s fare. Clevedon started well with some great pace and flank play, largely involving, for me, man of the match Kyle Bassett, who terrorised the home defence all afternoon with his direct and aggressive running. It was Cirencester though who had the first scoring opportunity when Danny Greaves had to save at full length to deny a good effort from Steve Roberston. Clevedon then took a stranglehold on the half however and Steve Cook had the first clear chance for Clevedon when he shot over from Mike Symons knockdown in the 20th minute.

After Steve Cook had an effort disallowed for offside, and Mike Symons had a shot well turned round the post by Matt Bulman in the home goal, Clevedon’s pressure finally paid off in the 37th minute, with a strange goal from Christian Sylvester. Kris Leek took a short corner on the left and played it back to Christian, whose cross was missed by two onrushing players, but they had distracted Bulman sufficiently for him to take his eye off the ball and it drifted past him into the net. It was no more than the visitors had deserved for their attacking play and Josh Brigham had another fine effort saved before the whistle blew for half time.

The second half started with Cirencester trying to fight their way back into the game and Andrew Chapman had a shot just clear the bar before Clevedon had really settled. However the visitors again took control and Kyle Bassett was a real threat down the right, setting up good scoring opportunities for Symons and Leek before Steve Cook also missed after being set up by Mike Symons. Former Clevedon veteran Paul Hunt made a substitute appearance for the home side but they were unable to make many clear shooting chances for themselves and Cook and Symons could have added further goals for Clevedon but again the chances were wasted and it was an anxious final 10 minutes for Clevedon fans. The excellent Bassett limped off for the visitors with cramp, and that signalled a let’s sit back approach from Clevedon as the home side tried in vain to snatch what would, in honesty, have been an underserved equaliser. As it was Clevedon held out without too many problems to record a 1-0 win but they really have to take their chances if they are to progress further in the competition. Their work rate was superb though, with Bassett, Cook, Sylvester and Hendy all in top form and this was a great performance overall, but please lads, can you kill off the game a bit earlier next time, my old ticker’s getting a bit stressed out!
