Clevedon Town 3 Corby Town 0
Clevedon turned in a fine performance to secure all three points in an entertaining game that, while perhaps lacking finesse, was full of pace, effort and commitment. The only disappointment was the attendance and those who preferred to sit in front of their TV watching rugby missed one of Clevedon’s best performances for a while as they passed with confidence and showed the kind of 100% commitment that has been missing perhaps in past seasons. Corby, in fairness, contributed a lot to the match and, on another day, their pace and aggression may well have brought them points.
With Mike Green and Danny Haines back in the Clevedon line-up, both sides started aggressively and their attacking intentions were set out from the start. Clevedon could well have taken an early lead when Steve Cook’s right wing cross was completely missed by Corby defender Tom Bonner but it also surprised Kris Leek and his snap shot was just turned aside by Daniel Crane in the visitor’s goal. Minutes later there were cries for a penalty as Corby claimed a handball on the goal line following a corner but it was not given and Corby were again frustrated in the 18th minute when James Gould’s well struck volley found Danny Greaves’ safe hands.
Both sides were now playing with pace and aggression and it was Clevedon’s turn to threaten next when Christian Sylvester fired over after good work by Brigham and Symons. Corby enjoyed a good spell in the middle of the first half and Lambley went close for them but it was Clevedon who finally broke the deadlock in the 36th minute. This came in the form of a fine goal by Kyle Bassett, who picked up the ball on the left and unleashed a superb shot out of the blue that simply flew past Crane into the net. Clevedon were now playing with confidence and Kris Leek saw his goal-bound shot cleared off the line by Bonner, and Steve Cook smashed a fierce shot just wide of the keeper’s left post. Their fine play was rewarded in the 43rd minute when Kris Leek picked up a pass from Mike Green before smashing a shot past the keeper from just outside the penalty area to make it 2-0. Corby never gave up though and seconds before the half time whistle, Tom Bonner sent a header inches over the home crossbar.
The second half started with both sides continuing to push forward but neither side threatened to add to the score until Mike Green tested Daniel Crane and then Mike Symons, having precious little luck in front of goal, shot just over. As Corby tired Clevedon were beginning to control the game and started to look relaxed and, while Corby substitute Jamie Patterson went close with a long range effort, it was the home side who were now in control and a third goal looked likely. It finally came in the 84th minute when Kris Leek sent in another scorcher and this time it was too hot for Daniel Crane in the visitor’s goal to handle and it squeezed through his hands to put Clevedon 3-0 ahead. Corby then fell away and it was Clevedon who finished the game in complete control and comfortable winners in the end. Credit goes to Corby though, especially for their fine first half showing and you could see why they had been unbeaten on their travels before today.
