Clevedon’s first away match of the new season ended in disappointment, as they were unlucky to go down to a single goal defeat at the hands of Chippenham Town.
Clevedon deserved a point over the ninety minutes and will rue a missed penalty in the second half when Mike Symons spot kick was well saved by home custodian Chris Snoddy diving to his right. It has to be said that the first half was a disappointing affair with Clevedon to often muscled out of their stride by their opponents. Chippenham had the lion share of play and created more chances without really troubling Danny Greaves in the Clevedon goal. The only effort of note came in the 19th minute when Kris Leek was robbed by Sean Seavill who sent a superb shot across Danny Greaves to give the Bluebirds a lead which they kept until half-time.
Having edged the first-half Chippenham were put under more pressure with Clevedon playing down the slope, however Chippenham looked dangerous on the break. Despite enjoying more of the play Clevedon were still struggling to create clear chances but, after a triple substitution by manager Phil Bater, there efforts were rewarded when substitute Kyle Bassett was tugged in the penalty area by Kevin Halliday and the Referee awarded a penalty. Sadly Mike Symons shot was well saved by the home keeper, and that was to cost the club dearly as Chippenham went on to withstand heavy Clevedon pressure and hold on to their first win of the season.
This was a disappointing result for the Seasiders who, as watching Yate Town assistant manager, Lee Barlass commented... Clevedon deserved at least a point for their second-half efforts. To summarise a game played by two hard working sides who were both lacking that vital final ball in front of goal.
