Clevedon Town 2 Cheshunt 1
Clevedon returned to league action and welcomed Cheshunt to the Hand Stadium for the Seasiders penultimate home league game of the season. And it was the home side who came from behind to beat relegated Cheshunt 2-1 in a game that was short on quality but in a volatile second-half was certainly not short of incident.
With Mike Trought out through injury, the home side were bolstered with the welcome return of Steve Cook to the substitutes bench after his long injury spell.
The first-half was a dreadful affair with precious little to note apart from Cheshunt’s only goal of the game, Dean Fenton finishing a pass from Liam Farrell in the 29th minute. In a match graced by Doug Hand and his family the only real incident of the opening period for the home side came on the stroke of half-time when Danny Haines hit the post from a narrow angle after Craig Loxton’s free kick.
If the first-half was dull and uneventful affair, the second-half was the exact opposite as the visitors appeared to loose their composure on several occasions, and were perhaps lucky only to have one player red carded. After David Hicks almost turned Kris Leeks cross into his own net, substitute Kyle Bassett had the ball in the visitors net with his first touch only to be flagged for offside. It would turn out to be an eventful half for the Seasiders substitutes, as Matt Prosser seized on a loose ball to equalise for Clevedon in the 71st minute. Moments later Clevedon were awarded a penalty after Glen Perry clearly handled a Bassett shot. Cheshunt reacted angrily to this decision and had three players booked for disputing what was in fairness a stonewall penalty.
After a long delay Clevedon’s third substitute Steve Cook, returning to the side after a long injury lay-off, saw his penalty comfortably saved by Cheshunt keeper Bobby Smith, Clevedon bounced back however, and took the lead in the 77th minute when Mitchell Page rose at the far post to head home Danny Haines right wing corner. After that the game turned sour, and it was no surprise when Cheshunt’s Glen Perry received a second yellow card after a clash with Mitchell Page right in front of the Directors box. A disgraceful melee followed and it was perhaps fortunate that Referee Mr T Lawrence blew the final whistle after just 3 minutes of the expected long injury time. A poor match overall with an ill tempered second period but a deserved three points at least for the home side.
