Cheshunt 1 Clevedon Town 2

Clevedon Town made the long midweek journey to Theobalds Lane, Hertfordshire to take on bottom placed club Cheshunt and came away with all three points from a 2-1 victory that lifts them into 5th position in the BGB league, their highest ever placing, and extends their unbeaten run to 10 games.

With Steve Cook’s right foot in plaster following his horrific injury against King’s Lynn, manager Phil Bater pushed the versatile Kevin Davies into midfield and gave a start to Josh Brigham at right back.

On a blustery night and a slippery surface Clevedon kicked off with the wind at their backs and immediately took the game to their opponents. On 10 minutes a long throw by Kris Leek was headed into the box by Mitchell Page to Matt Prosser, who turned and shot in one movement but Cheshunt keeper Bobby Smith saved well. Chris Sylvester, Page and Leek all tried shots that were off target, as Clevedon kept Cheshunt pinned in their own half with a succession of corners and long throw-ins that caused them trouble. On the half-hour a rare break forward from Cheshunt resulted in a cross from Jimmy Berry finding Darrell Cox who’s shot was cleared off the line by Mike Trought. Five minutes later Clevedon thought that they had finally made the breakthrough when a Danny Haines wind-assisted corner went straight into the net, but the referee Mr Saliy, who had an excellent game all evening, disallowed it for pushing in the box. More crosses and shots came from The Seasiders but, just as it looked like The Ambers had survived the first half onslaught, Josh Brigham swung a left-footed curling cross into the box which deceived everybody to end up in the back of the net for Josh’s first goal for the club on 42 minutes. Three minutes later a scorching shot from Kevin Davies missed by inches as The Seasiders went in 1 up at half time.

In the second half Cheshunt, now playing with the wind, worked hard to get level, and for the first 15 minutes it was all them as Clevedon were forced to defend deep. On 58 minutes Greavsie pulled off a magnificent one-handed save low down to his right to deny Jimmie Berry, but two minutes later he was powerless to stop the equaliser as Clevedon lost possession in midfield and Cheshunt’s Dave Hicks powered forward, drew the keeper and shot into the top of the net. The Seasiders regrouped and came more into the game again and Mike Symons was sent on in place of Matt Prosser. This proved to be another great substitution by the gaffer, as five minutes later a Kris Leek corner found Scott Hendy unmarked at the back of the area and his header goalwards was met on the line by another header from Symo to take the ball over Smith and re-establish Clevedon’s lead. Just then the heavens opened, and abandonment looked a distinct possibility, but the rain finally eased off and Clevedon again looked comfortable as Kevin Davies nearly increased the lead with a dipping free kick that Smith just tipped over the bar. There was one final scare for The Seasiders when Michael Spencer dribbled through their defence, got to the bye-line and sent in a dangerous cross that everybody missed, before Mr Saliy blew for full time and a result that leaves The Seasiders proudly occupying a play-off place.
