Clevedon Town 0 Bromsgrove Rovers 2
Clevedon’s five match unbeaten run came to a halt at The Hand Stadium as they lost 2-0 to a Bromsgrove Rovers side which stepped up a gear after a fairly even first half and came out worthy winners in the end before a good crowd of 186, which included many visiting fans.
The home side kept the same line-up which beat Corby Town and the opening honours were evenly shared as both sides tested each other put without really creating much, or testing the respective goalkeepers. The first real shots of note came from Steve Cook who first shot wide after a Mike Symons pass and then saw his close range shot well saved by Chris Taylor in the visitor’s goal. Despite having plenty of the play the visitors caused few problems for Danny Greaves and, although Clevedon edged the first half, it wasn’t a classic and neither side really looked worthy of a lead as the half time whistle blew.
Words will have to be raised with whoever brewed the half time cup of tea as Bromsgrove came out of the blocks for the second half with a newly found passion. They took the lead in the 48th minute when unmarked centre back John Snape powered home Kevin Banner’s left wing corner to put the visitors ahead with their first real shot on target. Nathan Lamey could have done better with a glancing header on 57 minutes but then made up for it when he put the visitors two ahead in the 70th minute. A long crossfield pass was missed by the defence and the ball fell to Lamey who controlled it well before superbly slamming a thunderbolt of a shot off the bar into the net, with Danny Greaves helpless in the home goal.
Despite playing Scott Hendy up front and pushing to get back into the game, it was Bromsgrove who looked in full control and the were never likely to lose their lead, although Kris Leek’s superb overhead kick nearly gave Clevedon a consolation goal. Lamey could have added to the visitors lead on a couple of occasions but this was a very disappointing second half performance by Clevedon and the visitors deserved their win, using their experience to snub out Clevedon’s threat. The only other things of note were an interesting refereeing performance by Weston’s Ron Ganfield and two large brawls which amazingly brought no red cards, or even yellow.
