Bashley 0 Clevedon Town 0
Clevedon left rainy North Somerset behind and travelled to the picturesque New Forest to take on a strong Bashley team, and returned home with a point from a goalless draw that kept Bashley’s undefeated home record in tact and extended The Seasiders’ unbeaten run to six games.
Phil Bater picked the same eleven that started last weekend against Bedford, and they had all the early pressure, forcing several corners in the first ten minutes and taking the game to their hosts. Bashley’s first attempt was a header over the bar from a corner on 12 minutes. On 20 minutes Kris Leek had a free kick that went just wide, and from a Geraint Bater free kick shortly after Scott Hendy’s overhead just eluded Mike Trought in the box. Matt Prosser was the next to go close with a turn and shot that was well saved by The Bash keeper David Elm. On 35 minutes Bashley spurned a great chance when Ryan Moss headed just over the bar when he looked certain to score. The Seasiders came strong again at the end of the half when Kris Leek picked the ball up and ran at Bashley’s defence, and as they backed off he unleashed a shot, which beat Elm but unfortunately came back off the foot of his post and was cleared. On 43 minutes a Leek long throw was volleyed right-footed by Danny Haines, but went wide, and the half ended goalless.
Bashley obviously got a roasting by their manager at half time because they came out for the second period and threw everything at Clevedon, who were under siege for the first 15 minutes. However, a combination of poor finishing by the home team and good defending by The Seasiders kept The Bash out. On 65 minutes another surging run from Leek relieved the pressure, but he shot as he was tackled, the ball was blocked by the imposing figure of Elm, and Matt Prosser was unable to turn the ball in during the ensuing scramble. Bashley then swept forward again and a double save by first Danny Greaves and then Kris Leek on the line averted the danger. On 75 minutes Mitchell Page replaced Mike Symons, who had had a quiet game by his recent standards. 5 minutes later Leek was again bursting forward and this time Elm came out of his area to kick the ball away, but it cannoned off the back of a defender to go agonisingly wide of the post for a corner. At this point The Seasiders made their second and last substitution, with Steve Cook replacing Matt Prosser. In the last 10 minutes Kevin Davies twice burst forward and had shots that were easily saved by Elm, and a Cookie dribble in the box produced another save from the keeper, who took Bashley’s own man of the match award. At the death Davies was booked for a clumsy tackle and Craig Davis had one final shot for The Bash, which Greavsie saved well low down, before the referee blew for full time and a result that takes The Seasiders up to 7th in the table.
An entertaining game played on a difficult surface and one in which, just like Bedford last week, The Seasiders were pleased with the draw, but really could have taken all three points from the number of chances created. Man of the match for me was Kris Leek, a midfield dynamo, who came close to scoring on a number of occasions.
