Match Report

Welling United 0 Clevedon Town 3

Clevedon Town qualified for the first round proper of the F. A. Cup for the first time in their history, with a magnificent performance at Park View Road, which belied the difference in the league positions of the two teams. Early goals from Billy Clark and a Leon Hapgood penalty put the home side on the back foot and despite a second half revival by Welling, Clevedon made victory safe with a Mitchell Page breakaway goal.

Clevedon Town started the first half playing down the slope and made this advantage count in the 3rd minute when a long cross from Kris Witcombe on the right found Billy Clark on the far side of the penalty area. Billy had time to control the ball and smash it past home goalkeeper Jamie Turner. The Clevedon Supporters were only just finishing the celebrations when the lead was increased in the 13th minute. Jack Pitcher ran onto a through ball from Mitchell Page and was tripped in the penalty box by goalkeeper Jamie Turner. The referee rightly awarded a spot kick, from which Leon Hapgood sent Turner the wrong way. Despite being 2 goals in front Clevedon refused to sit back and had several good opportunities to increase the lead. Welling’s attacks were easily dealt with by the resolute Clevedon defence including several good saves from Danny Greaves.

Welling obviously received the proverbial kick up the backside from their manager at half time as they put the Clevedon defence under pressure from the kick off. They came close to scoring on several occasions but were thwarted by poor finishing and a defence and goalkeeper who had more than their fair share of luck. Clevedon were restricted to a handful of breakaway attacks. From one of these Mitchell Page latched onto a Billy Clark clearance and nudged the ball past Steve Perkins. Mitchell beat the goalkeeper to the ball, knocked it past him and was able to slot the ball into an empty net. Mitchell was keen to share his joy at scoring with the Clevedon supporters but unfortunately he was booked, along with Geraint Bater, for their celebrations.

The Seasiders then hung on for the 3 nil win and the prize of a first round proper home game against League opposition in the form of Chester City. It would be unfair to single out an individual player as man of the match as the whole team were magnificent.
