Clevedon Town 2 Stamford 3
It’s an old cliche in football that this was a game of two half’s. Clevedon with striker Tom Jacobs acting as emergency goal keeper for the suspended Danny Greaves started off looking sharper, and went ahead as early as the 8th minute when visiting keeper Martin Kearney lost possession of the ball and Jack Pitcher managed to squeeze the ball into an empty net to give the home side an early lead. After that it looked as if Clevedon could enjoy a comfortable afternoon, but it was Stamford who equalised in the 17th minute when a break down the right saw Lee Marshall chip Tom Jacobs with the ball dropping in the far corner of the net. However, it didn't take long for the Seasiders to regain the lead when Danny Haines free-kick found the unmarked Scott Hendy who headed past the keeper for his first goal of the season. Clevedon continued to press forward but were unable to add to their tally before the half-time whistle blew.
Second-half began in controversial style as Gloucestershire referee Mr S Knapp, who had an interesting game, refused Clevedon what seemed to be a blatant penalty for handball against a Stamford defender. Minutes later Stamford equalised as Scott Musgrove sent a shot across Tom Jacobs into the far corner of the goal. This surprised Clevedon and the enthusiasm they showed in the first-half seemed to drain away as they allowed Stamford to control the game for long spells. It was always likely to be the visitors who would snatch a winner and so it proved when Martin Wormall beat Jacobs with just 10 minutes of the match remaining. Clevedon never looked to have the appetite to claw their way back into the game and so it proved when the ref blew the final whistle with Clevedon loosing 3-2. A disappointing afternoon for the home fans who braved a bitterly cold afternoon to support their favourites.
