Clevedon started this game unchanged despite late fitness tests on Billy Clark, Danny Haines and Rob Scott. The seasiders started brightly and hit the bar on 15 minutes with a Mike Trought header, they continued to threaten The Martyrs defence with home defender Neil Smothers nearly putting the ball into his own net after slicing his clearance. However, Merthyr took the lead against the run of play in the 24th minute, when Gareth Wharton picked up the ball on the edge of the area from a corner and made no mistake with his strike on goal. Merthyr's lead did not deter Clevedon who persisted with attacking play, on the half hour Jack Pitcher crossed a delightful ball into the 6 yard box only for Mike Trought to narrowly miss with a flying header.

In the second half Merthyr got into their stride producing some neat passing football but rarely made Danny Greaves work in the visitors goal. Both teams made a number of substitutions during the half, with Merthyr happy to play out the remainder of the game with a 1-0 lead, however Clevedon continued to press forward in search of an equaliser, in the last ten minutes Clevedon had a succession of corners but were unable to bury the ball into Merthyr's net.

In summary Clevedon matched their opponents throughout the 90 minutes and were unlucky not to get a point from this hard fought game.
