Match Report

Clevedon Town 1 Mangotsfield United 1

This was Clevedon’s second derby match in 5 days as they welcomed top-of-the-table Mangotsfield United to the Hand Stadium, The game was played out on a wet and greasy pitch as both sides shared the points in a competitively contested match.

Manager Phil Bater started with the same line-up that had defeated Yate Town in midweek. Very few chances were created in the first half as both sides defended in numbers to stifle any forward play, first opportunity to score fell to Clevedon in the 8th minute when Darren Mullings floated free kick was met with a powerful header from Billy Clark, visiting keeper Will Puddy did well to gather the ball. Clevedon were dealt and injury blow five minutes later when Jack Pitcher had to be replaced with Danny Haines after the young striker pulled-up with a hamstring injury. Mangotsfield opened the scoring in the 26th minute when Seasiders keeper Danny Greaves miss-kicked a clearance and the ball fell for Lewis Powell who squared the ball for Rob Claridge to score an easy goal. Clevedon went in search of an equaliser and had to wait until the 45th minute when Geraint Bater scored his first goal of the season with a fierce drive on goal which took a deflection off Mangotsfield skipper Gary Warren. With seconds of the half remaining Leon Hapgood was unlucky not to put Clevedon in front when he broke through Mangotsfield rearguard shooting narrowly wide.

Clevedon’s injury woes continued with Kris Witcombe replacing an injured Hanin Randhane for the start of the second half, as both sides looked for a breakthrough against equally solid defences. Mangotsfield only real chance of the second half came in the 67th minute when a good run by Dave Anyinsah allowed Lewis Powell to test Danny Greaves in the home goal. Clevedon pushed forward in the last fifteen minutes and went close with efforts from Danny Haines and Darren Mullings. Mangotsfield manager Lee Howells used all his substitutes in an attempt to get more than a point from this game, however, the final whistle blew with both sets of fans declaring the draw a fair result.
