Clevedon Town 1 Hitchin Town 1
An entertaining match ended with the honours being shared and another long distance replay will be required if Clevedon are to progress further in the FA Cup.
Match started at a tremendous pace with both sides going on the attack. The first chance fell to Leon Hapgood but his diving header in the 4th minute went wide. Hitchin’s Daniel French was beginning to cause problems down the left and it was he who put the Canaries ahead in the 10th minute when he seized on a rebound after David Deeney had hit the crossbar. After that goal Clevedon pushed forward in search of an equaliser, with Hapgood, Pitcher, Clark and Page all having chances although Hitchin always looked dangerous on the break and Daniel French had another good shot saved by Danny Greaves in the 35th minute. Just before half-time Hitchin keeper Robert Beckwith was penalised by Southampton Referee Mr W Bull, but the resultant indirect free-kick was sent just wide by Leon Hapgood.
Second-half started sensationally for the Seasiders when they were awarded a penalty after David Deeney handled Jack Pitcher’s shot in he area. Skipper Leon Hapgood stepped up to smash the ball past Robert Beckwith for the equaliser. After that both sides had opportunities to grab a winner, but the numerous substitutions slowed the pace of the game after all the tremendous pace of the opening hour, and to some extent the game fizzled out with both sides having to accept a draw and a replay at Topfield Hitchin on Tuesday night.
