Clevedon Town 2 Gloucester City 2
Clevedon Town and Gloucester City celebrated the new year with a thrilling 2-2 draw played in heavy rain on a pitch which, was very wet, but played well. Both sides put in 100% effort on the difficult surface and the draw was a fair result in the circumstances in-front of a healthy crowd of 303.
Both sides showed a positive attitude from the start and Gloucester could have scored as early as the opening minute when Danny Greaves was forced to pull off a good save from Ollie Barnes. Mitchell Page then went close for Clevedon in the 7th minute as both sides came to terms with wet surface. Clevedon took the lead in the 29th minute when Andy Gurney’s header beat Matthew Bath in the visitors goal for his first goal for the Seasiders. However, Clevedon’s lead was short lived as they for a sucker punch just a minute later, when Jason Welsh scored with simplest of headers when he was found unmarked a yard from the goal-line. Both sides kept pressing forward with Gloucester’s Alex Sykes hitting the crossbar with a long-range effort in the 42 minute.
Both continued to press forward in the second-half and numerous chances were created with Andy Gurney and Mitchell Page coming closest for the home side. Clevedon regained the lead on 71 minutes when Scott Hendy’s cross was flicked on by Andy Gurney to Leon Hapgood who steady himself before smashing the ball home. Gloucester began to push men forward in search of an equaliser and came close on several occasions with Clevedon also looking to catch them on the break. However, it was the introduction of veteran Adie Harris who was brought down in the final minute and from the resulting free-kick a mad scramble in the goal mouth and Ollie Barnes scrambled the ball home for a deserved equaliser.
