Match Report
Chippenham Town 2 Clevedon Town 0
Clevedon Town's eight match unbeaten run came to an end with this poor showing against an unusually out of form Chippenham, a goal in each half by Dave Gilroy giving the home side only their fourth win in eleven games.
The evening almost started disastrously for the visitors, a second minute goal-mouth collision ending in 'keeper Danny Greaves requiring lengthy attention from Physio Paul Pocock, but the Clevedon shot-stopper eventually got to his feet and resumed play. A few minutes after, the Seasiders mounted their first attack on the home goal, and a clearance was hoisted back into the area by Kris Witcombe. Chippenham goalkeeper Chris Snoddy completely misjudged the flight of the ball and was relieved to see the ball bounce just wide of a post.
Playing down the slope, Clevedon pressed forward and had several close chances to take the lead. On 20 minutes, Leon Hapgood cut in from the left wing and sent in a 25 yard shot which bounced off the top of the bar with the 'keeper standing watching it. And five minutes from half-time, Mike Trought had a similar effort which bounced down from the underside of the bar, and the resulting clearance was returned by Jack Pitcher, only to have that effort cleared off the line.
The home side were restricted to a few forays towards the Clevedon goal, but apart from a long range shot that Greaves did well to palm over, their only real attempt on goal resulted in the only score in the first half. A cross from the left was headed back into the middle of the penalty box, where the unmarked Gilroy was lurking, and he gave Greaves no chance to save as he netted from close range.
Trought received a knock in the final minutes of the first half and was replaced by Tom Jacobs after the break. Mitchell Page and Pete Sheppard also saw action during the second period, replacing Matt Rawlins and Pitcher respectively. The half itself was relatively forgettable, lots of midfield action alleviated by occasional darts at goal, Chippenham's efforts being spoilt by woeful inaccuracy, and the visitors showing their usual inability to find a final touch on the ball. The second goal was inevitable and, to a certain extent, predictable, a midfield through ball finding Gilroy unmarked and racing to beat the offside trap, advancing on goal and beating Greaves with a low shot.
