Clevedon Town 1 Cheshunt 3
Clevedon crashed to a 3-1 defeat at the Hand Stadium in their vital relegation clash with Cheshunt in a match ruined as a spectacle by the heavy swirling wind. The difference between the sides was essentially in the finishing, but overall the Seasiders performance simply wasn’t good enough on the day.
There were very few chances made in the first period, although The Ambers
David Hicks went close twice before the visitors took the lead in the 36th minute when Lloyd Opara slotted past Danny Greaves in the home goal for the last meaningful action of a very poor first-half.
The second-half opened with Clevedon showing a lot more effort and they equalised in the 50th minute, when Jack Pitcher found Pete Sheppard on the right and his cross-come-shot was missed by both visiting keeper Martin Peat, and Clevedon substitute Mike Symons with the ball going straight into the net. Pete Sheppard was getting more involved after returning from his Paulton Rover’s loan spell and was unlucky not to add another goal soon after. Martin Peat in the visitors goal pulled off a superb save in the 73rd minute to deny Geraint Bater a goal. The next action came in the 81st minute when Cheshunt broke away with Skipper Steve Obeng on hand at the far post to tap home Darrell Cox’s cross to retake the lead.
Clevedon pushed forward for an equaliser and Somerset Referee Mr R Martin infuriated the home fans in the 87th minute when Pete Sheppard’s shot was brilliantly turned round by the visiting keeper only for the Referee to give a goal-kick? The final move of the match summed up Clevedon’s afternoon when Scott Hendy’s free-kick went straight to Cheshunt’s Lee Allen, who pushed the ball forward for top scorer Darrell Cox to bare down on goal and shoot easily past Danny Greaves to make it 3-1 with the final kick of the game.
In summary this was an instantly forgettable match ruined by the strong wind. Defeat put’s Phil Bater’s team into a relegation battle if they are to retain their Premier division status!
