Gurney and Romdhane frustrated as Bath knock out Clevedon in the Errea Cup
They say you should always be wary of the return of former players and that was certainly the case tonight as Phil Walsh returned to The Hand Stadium and scored a fluke goal to send a rather fortunate Bath City side through to the next round of the Errea Cup. To be honest neither side over impressed and the match only really came to life in the final twenty minutes when Clevedon pressed forward for an equaliser but, despite great efforts from Andy Gurney and Hamin Romdhane, it proved to be in vain and it will be Bath who travel to Tiverton in the next round.
The first half was easily forgotten other than for a facial injury that saw Scott Hendy replaced by Billy Clark on the quarter hour and Phil Walsh’s goal for the visitors in the 23rd minute. The goal came when a poor back pass left Danny Greaves struggling and his rushed clearance on the edge of the penalty area struck Phil Walsh and rebounded back past the keeper and somehow ended up in the back of the net. That, other than an Andy Gurney header that went over, was just about the pick of the first half action.
The second half saw Clevedon have most of the play with Bath content to preserve their lead and largely restrict Clevedon to long range efforts and try and catch the home team on the break. Andy Gurney came closest for Clevedon with two long range efforts, one superbly tipped over by Bath youth keeper, Eddie Quelch, and the other effort hitting the outside of the post. Hamin Romdhane was also unlucky when his powerful header from Kris Witcombe’s excellent cross was tipped over again by the keeper. Darren Edwards, on as a substitute for Bath, had the chance to seal the match for the visitors at the very end but missed his chance and the game ended with Clevedon frustrated in their search for an equaliser and that saw the end of their eleventh, and final, cup match of the season.
